About Our Community
Established in 1949, Broad Ridge Housing Corporation holds a proud legacy as the first housing co-operative in the State of New Jersey formed by tenants to collectively purchase and preserve their own community.
Faced with a looming eviction deadline on December 27, 1949, eighteen visionary families banded together. Driven by a spirit of "self-help and community interest," and supported by a prominent coalition of local civic leaders and clergy, these residents pooled their resources to purchase the property for $75,000. In doing so, they overcame significant systemic challenges and discrimination, successfully transforming neglected properties into modern, stable, and deeply rooted homes.
Today, as a federal 501(c)(4) non-profit organization, we remain entirely volunteer-governed. We are dedicated to preserving this rich history of mutual support, maintaining our community assets, and fostering an inclusive, neighborly environment for all who call Broad Ridge Housing Corporation, home.
